Raven Braid Pewter Kilt Pin

This piece holds a special place in our collection—it was our very first hand-sculpted design.

Long before it became a pewter kilt pin, the Raven Braid began as a simple ball of clay. Each raven was sculpted by hand, their bodies intertwined to create the distinctive braided design. That original sculpting process gives the piece an organic character quite different from the clean, precise lines of our designs created from vector artwork.

Look closely and you'll see it in the feathers, the curves, and the subtle irregularities left by the sculpting process. The ravens seem to flow into one another, creating a continuous braid with a sense of movement from beginning to end.

The raven has appeared throughout the mythology and folklore of cultures around the world and is often associated with wisdom, intelligence, curiosity, mystery, and transformation.

Ravens hold a particularly important place in Norse mythology. Odin was accompanied by two ravens, Huginn and Muninn, whose names are commonly translated as Thought and Memory. Each day they flew throughout the world, returning to Odin with the knowledge they had gathered.

In Celtic tradition, ravens have long been associated with wisdom, prophecy, battle, and transformation, and are closely connected with The Morrígan, the powerful goddess associated with fate, sovereignty, and war.

From that first ball of clay, the original sculpture is now hand cast in lead-free pewter and individually hand finished in our shop. The antiqued finish settles into the sculpted feather details, helping reveal the texture and character of the original handwork.

A piece that began as an experiment in clay has become one of our most loved designs—a reminder that sometimes the beginning of something special is remarkably simple.
