The unicorn is the national animal of Scotland

Greek physician and historian Ctesias (circa 400 BCE) appears to be the first person to write about a one-horned animal in that resembles what we describe as a Unicorn today. Theory has it that Ctesias was actually describing an Indian Rhino in his text in the book "Indica", but the description has led to the modern picture of a unicorn:

"Their bodies are white, their heads are dark red, and their eyes dark blue. They have a horn in the middle of the forehead that is one cubit in length; the base of this horn is pure white … the upper part is sharp and of a vivid crimson, and the middle portion is black. … Other asses, tame or wild … do not have an ankle-bone… but these do have an ankle-bone … the most beautiful that I have ever seen…. This animal is exceedingly swift and powerful, so that no creature, neither the horse nor any other, can overtake it"

In heraldry (the study of ancient pictures, symbols and designs found on armour and flags) the unicorn can be found on Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and has been embraced by dozens of other countries, appearing in coats of arms and family crests. For Scotland the unicorn has been a Scottish heraldic symbol since the 12th century, when it was used on an early form of the Scottish coat of arms by William I.In Celtic mythology, the Unicorn of Scotland symbolized innocence and purity, healing powers, joy and even life itself, and was also seen as a symbol of masculinity and power.

The charm is 3/4" and is made of hand-cast, lead-free pewter hung on a 24" chain.
