The Legend of the Thistle
According to Scottish legend, the thistle once helped save Scotland from a surprise attack.
During the reign of King Alexander III in the 13th century, a Norse army led by King Haakon IV of Norway came ashore on the western coast of Scotland. Tradition tells that as Norse soldiers approached the Scots under cover of darkness, one barefoot warrior stepped on a thistle and cried out in pain.
His cry alerted the sleeping Scots, allowing them to prepare for the attack.
The story became associated with the Battle of Largs in 1263, and the humble but fiercely defended thistle eventually became one of Scotland's most enduring national symbols.
